Have to say shooting with Hedi Gwaii is difficult. Don’t get me wrong, she’s great. Absolutely one of the best models in Vancouver. The problem is she’s always busy. Not just she got lots of modeling to do, she runs a model agency company as well. I felt very lucky when we eventually found a day that works for her.  I brought extra gear with me this time because I had my assistance Natasha with me. She’s been assisted me many times. She predicts where I need my lights pretty well. Life is much easier working with her.  End up none of the extra gear got used. I used my most trusted combo for the whole shoot. Profoto B2 with 2×3′ OCF softbox. This is probably the only one that gives me decent result for both close up and full body shots no matter what the weather condition is. When I do workshops I usually bring this modifier.

Summer time is the high season for all the photographers. Everyone is shooting and they are more or less concentrated over certain areas. We wanted to pick a location is kind of unique. We chose a place that looks very different. It actually doesn’t look like it’s near Vancouver at all.

First look started somewhere under the shade with some sunlight peeking through trees.

Shooting under the shade is good because it’s easy and bad because it lack of that dramatic look that harsh sun can give you. So we next look is directly under the sun and the Heidi is facing the sun. All of sudden, the lighting became very difficult. To make the harsh light look soft, I needed my softbox be at exactly the right angle and I needed a lot of power.

Wardrobe change and try some different angles.

The sun is quickly moving down to the horizon, I found usually the best shooting time is around 15  minutes long for the golden hour. Good thing is we were well prepared and we got extra hands. So this time I wasn’t in a panic as usual 🙂
